Matfen Hall Gets a Premium Resin-Bound Upgrade
At Debmat Surfacing Ltd, we take pride in delivering specialist surfacing solutions that enhance both the appearance and usability of high-end properties. Our recent project at the prestigious Matfen Hall Hotel in Northumberland showcases our team’s expertise in resin-bound footpath and courtyard installations.
The objective was clear: improve the accessibility and visual appeal of Matfen Hall’s grounds, while preserving the heritage character of this grand country estate.
Creating a Durable Footpath Through Gravel Landscaping
One of the key elements of the project was the construction of a new pedestrian footpath weaving through existing gravel areas. The goal was to introduce a more structured, stable, and accessible walkway without compromising the historic surroundings.
To begin, our team carefully excavated and removed the loose gravel surface across a stretch of 140 metres by 1.2 metres wide. We then installed a steel edging system to define and secure the new pathway layout.
Once the base was prepared, we laid a 50mm dense binder course, providing a solid foundation for the surface. Finally, we installed a 20mm resin-bound top layer using Ronacrete’s Barley Butter RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing – a natural-looking finish that blends beautifully with the surrounding gravel and stone architecture.
Transforming the Fountain Courtyard Reception Area
The second stage of the project focused on Matfen Hall’s striking central courtyard and fountain reception area. This space serves as a key arrival point for guests, making both aesthetics and performance crucial.
Our team excavated the existing gravel to a depth of 100mm, ensuring the ground was fully prepared for long-term stability. We followed this with an 80mm binder course to provide the required load-bearing capacity, especially important in a high-traffic setting.
To complete the transformation, we applied the same 20mm Barley Butter resin-bound surface, giving the courtyard a refined and cohesive look that complements the nearby pathways.
