Reviving Your Multi-Use Games Area: A Sustainable Refurbishment
Local sports facilities are vital for community well-being, and their upkeep is essential. In Westerhope, we recently undertook the sustainable refurbishment of an old, worn-out multi use games area (MUGA). This project showcases how with the right care and expertise, existing sports surfaces can be transformed, promoting both activity and community spirit.
Before the Refurbishment
The MUGA at Westerhope Community Association had seen better days. Overgrown with weeds and covered in moss, the surface was slippery and unsafe. The lines of the courts were faded, the basketball nets tattered, and the goalposts were on their last legs. The perimeter fence was damaged, compromising the security and aesthetics of the area.
The Refurbishment Process
Our goal was to revitalize the existing surface without the extensive cost of resurfacing. Here’s how we achieved this transformation:
1. Treatment and Preparation
- Moss and Weed Treatment: We started with an environmentally friendly biocide treatment to eliminate moss and weeds without harming the surrounding flora.
- Deep Cleaning: An industrial-grade deep wash cleared years of dirt and grime, preparing the surface for further treatment.
2. Surface Reinforcement
- Acrylic Sealer Application: An acrylic sealer was used to seal the porous surface, preventing water ingress and future weed growth.
- Tennis Court Binder: A layer of tennis court binder fortified the surface, filling in minor cracks and providing a solid base for the new paint.
3. Painting and Line Marking
- Anti-Slip Coating: We applied two coats of LTA-approved anti-slip green paint, ensuring the surface is safe and playable in all weather conditions.
- Line Marking: Fresh, vibrant line markings were carefully applied, adhering to the specifications for multiple sports.
4. Equipment and Perimeter Upgrades
- Basketball and Goalposts: Brand new basketball nets and goalposts were installed, meeting professional standards.
- Fence Repair: We repaired the perimeter fence, restoring its integrity and appearance.
After the Refurbishment
The transformation has been remarkable. The MUGA now boasts a bright, inviting surface with clear, accurate markings for football, basketball, and tennis.
