Forecourt Resurfacing for David James Limited: Phase 1

Debmat Surfacing Ltd was appointed by David James Limited, a well-established used car dealership in Benton, to resurface their busy forecourt and customer parking area. Because the site must remain operational and stocked with vehicles at all times, the works were scheduled in two phases, with Phase 1 now completed and Phase 2 planned for early next year.

Phase 1 comprised 590 m² of resurfacing to the front and side of the car sales building, alongside the installation of bollards and thermoplastic line-marking works.

Scope of Works – Phase 1

1. Installation of Recessed Manhole Covers

To improve both safety and durability, we supplied and installed new recessed manhole covers set on a mortar bed, finished with a QC10 rapid-setting concrete surround.
This ensured all access points were strengthened and left flush with the final surface.

2. Preparation of the Existing Surface

The existing tarmac was worn, uneven, and extensively patched. Preparation included:

• Cutting chases to create clean and stable tie-in points
• Sweeping the full work area to remove debris and contaminants
• Applying a bituminous emulsion tack coat to guarantee strong adhesion to the new asphalt layer

3. Laying 40mm Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA)

Debmat supplied and laid 40mm SMA, chosen for its durability and resistance to deformation – ideal for a commercial forecourt surfacing with constant vehicle movement.

Additional material was used to build up low spots in the existing surface, improving drainage and eliminating trip hazards.

4. Telescopic Bollard Installation

Telescopic security bollards were installed as part of the project to help control vehicle access and improve the overall security of the site.

5. Line Marking – Scheduled for Completion of Phase 1

After the asphalt cures, we will carry out thermoplastic line marking, including:

• Approximately 25 parking bays
• A prominent “KEEP CLEAR” marking at the entrance

These will be applied once weather and curing conditions are suitable.

Phase 1 has transformed the first half of the site, providing a smooth, durable, and visually improved surface ready for bay marking and customer use. With the dealership operating throughout the works, the project was delivered with minimal disruption, demonstrating Debmat’s ability to manage phased commercial resurfacing projects efficiently.

We look forward to returning in early 2026 to complete Phase 2.
