Hard Landscaping – Armstrong Building, Newcastle University

The hard landscaping project at the Armstrong Building in Newcastle was meticulously planned to address multiple issues with the existing pathways and external features. The main focus was on enhancing the durability and appearance of the area while also addressing drainage problems and ensuring all surfaces were level and safe. Key aspects of the project included:

1. Resurfacing of Existing Footpaths: Two sections of the existing flagged footpath were repaired and resurfaced with a 75mm layer of 6mm tarmac. This not only improved the surface quality but also ensured a long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing finish.

5. Aco Drainage Installation: To further address drainage concerns, 15 linear meters of Aco drainage were installed. This system is designed to manage surface water efficiently, reducing the risk of puddles and ensuring a safe and dry pathway.
6. Ironwork Adjustment: As part of the comprehensive approach to hard landscaping, all ironwork in the area was raised and reset to ensure it aligned with the newly laid surfaces, enhancing both safety and aesthetics.
7. Surface Planing and Asphalt Laying: Approximately 990m² of the existing surface was planed out to a depth of 100mm and properly disposed of. Following this, a 60mm binder course was laid, topped with a 40mm thick 10mm close-graded surface course of stone mastic asphalt. This multi-layered approach provides a robust and smooth finish, suitable for the heavy foot traffic expected around the university.
8. Road Marking: The final stage of the project involved marking out all necessary road lines to ensure clear guidance for both pedestrians and vehicles, enhancing safety and navigation around the Armstrong Building.
