Newcastle Airport Runway & Hard Stand Surfacing

Hardstands enable airliners to board and offload passengers from their planes with stair trucks, mobile ramps and built in stairs, without the need for dedicated jet bridges. At Newcastle Airport, there was also the requirement for airside shuttle busses to be able to approach the planes and provide passenger access between the new terminal and the aircraft.

DEBMAT SURFACING LIMITED were tasked with relaying the existing hardstand and runway connection as part of the rapid expansion plans for the airport; excavating the existing surface laid previously, and relay the site to full construction. This comprised of a 600mm dig, including 12′ H.D. manhole covers and frames, plus new drainage.

With repairs to the main car parks, perimeter track and external maintenance areas also required, DEBMAT were responsible for the processing and relaying of nearly 68000m2 of tarmac, in time for the new Concorde flights due in August 1982.
