From there a 50m path leads directly to the 14th century Cresswell Pele Tower at which point a 25 m spur takes us to the walled garden entrance. The transportation of materials required the strategic use of path protection boards along this 75m stretch to safeguard the garden’s integrity. Volunteers played a crucial role, maintaining the garden’s vibrant borders and ensuring the flora remained undisturbed throughout the transformation process.

Site Clearance: Laying the Groundwork

The initial phase involved the removal of excess vegetation, grass, and debris, alongside the demolition of an outdated greenhouse base. This clearance set the stage for the garden’s rebirth, paving the way for the installation of new features and infrastructure.

Infrastructure Installation: The Backbone of Garden Functionality

Key to the garden’s functionality were the infrastructural enhancements:

  • Electric Ducts and Lighting: The garden was equipped with electric ducts to power footpath lighting bollards and three strategic power points, illuminating the beauty of the garden at night.

A new paved area and a 6m oak gazebo with a cedar shingle roof were introduced, providing a picturesque setting for events.

New 900mm wide footpaths were developed, leading to key areas and finished with timber edging and golden amber gravel. The creation of four planters and a wildlife pond added to the garden’s biodiversity and aesthetic appeal. An orchard was planted with varieties known to have grown in the Medieval period, directly linking the garden with the Pele tower.

Final Touches: Sealing the Transformation

The project culminated with the installation of a new double timber gate for the maintenance storage area, the removal of all protection boards, and the cleaning up of the compound area on the village green, which was then enriched with new topsoil, levelled, and seeded for grass.
